Telus Spark, The New Science Centre
One of Canada’s most up-and-coming cities, Calgary is home to Telus Spark, the country’s first new purpose-built science centre in nearly three decades.
Designed to spark the imagination and wonder of visitors, the combination science centre/museum allows kids and adults alike to pilot and test new ideas, zoom down a 63-foot slide, or explore the inner workings of the human brain. The sensory-rich exploration unfolds across multiple galleries and exhibit spaces.
Eos Lightmedia was retained to provide unique exhibit lighting for four of the Spark’s galleries and the Creative Kids museum, and to meet the building’s design goal of achieving LEED Gold certification.
Eos designed lighting for the exhibits based on a museum-grade track lighting system with solid-state LED sources. In addition to providing excellent colour rendering of the exhibits, this technology enhances conservation of sensitive artifacts and the system is low-maintenance and energy-efficient.
To ensure the design was implemented successfully, the Eos team supervised the lighting installation and provided focus and programming services.
The building achieved its LEED Gold certification and, thanks in part to Eos’s innovative approach to lighting, reduced annual energy use by 65% over conventional designs.
