Telus World of Science
One of the most recognizable icons of the Vancouver skyline, the exterior of Science World at Telus World of Science is a bright, bold and geometric dome that comprises 128 hexagons and six pentagons.
In 2009, Science World retrofitted its iconic exterior with 391 full-colour, sustainable LED luminaires and Eos Lightmedia was contracted to commission the controls and develop creative content.
The client wanted to display a visual representation of Science World’s power use in real time but there were no existing lighting apps designed to pixel map and control lighting on a large sphere—so Eos created and programmed custom software. Eos also created a custom controller and a wireless interactive app that runs on smartphones and tablets, allowing visitors to select pre-programmed shows that are displayed on the dome.
The result was a series of ten dynamic shows, widespread media coverage and the ability for the dome display to change based on holidays and events—a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween, fireworks for New Years’ Eve or solid pink for Pink Shirt Day (anti-bullying). Inside, the curious of all ages can explore a variety of science and technology exhibits designed to inspire innovation throughout British Columbia.
